Welcome to Qaraweyin Gallery an online gallery dedicated to celebrating and promoting the rich tapestry of African art and culture. Founded by a Moroccan woman now based in London, this platform is deeply inspired by the legacy of the University of Al Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco—the oldest existing, continually operating higher educational institution in the world, established in 859 CE by Fatima al-Fihri, a visionary woman.
The University of Al Qarawiyyin is not only a symbol of knowledge and learning but also a masterpiece of art and architecture. Its intricate designs, from the mesmerising geometric patterns to the elegant Arabic calligraphy, reflect the profound artistic heritage of the Islamic world. The zellij (mosaic tilework), carved plaster, and wooden lattices of Al Qarawiyyin are timeless examples of how art and culture can transcend borders and eras.
Inspired by this legacy, Qaraweyin Gallery seeks to honour the artistic traditions of Africa, from ancient masterpieces to contemporary works, while fostering a deeper understanding of the continent’s diverse cultural expressions. Just as Al Qarawiyyin served as a bridge between cultures, we aim to connect art enthusiasts, collectors, and cultural explorers with the vibrant creativity of Africa.
Our curated collection features paintings, sculptures, textiles, and more, each piece telling a unique story of identity, history, and innovation. We also draw inspiration from the artistic heritage of Al Qarawiyyin, blending its timeless patterns and craftsmanship with the bold, dynamic expressions of African art.
As a Moroccan woman rooted in the rich history of Al Qarawiyyin and now based in the multicultural hub of London, I am passionate about creating a space where art and culture can inspire, educate, and unite people across the globe.
Join us on this journey to celebrate the beauty, resilience, and ingenuity of African art and culture. Together, let’s explore the past, present, and future of African creativity.
